Rude pre-election gestures in Croatia

It is not only Poland that is facing upcoming elections, but Croatia as well. While in the former the debate is flaring up around LGBT issues and President Duda’s hostile utterances on the subject, Croatians are flicking a bird to a famous singer Miroslav Škoro. While debating Gordan Jandroković on TV, he supported his opponent’s pro-life stance and pointed out that even a rape resulting in a pregnancy should not necessarily grant an abortion and the victim should consult her family first.
The web burst out with images of people giving the finger to Škoro. The flashmob was joined by ex-President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović herself. There have been ongoing debates around legally restricting access to abortion; however, even without such measures abortion rates have plummeted tenfold (!) in the last ten years.
Everyone and their mama are jumping on this bandwagon. While Škoro’s opponents take their middle finger selfies 4Chan style, he himself dramatically rants about “the middle-finger coalition showing its true face.”
In Poland and Croatia alike the antiliberal trends have religious underpinnings. Both countries boast high church attendance rates, and politicians would be blind not to pay attention to this (and many in the political circles are reverend Catholics themselves).
One can but wonder: if antiliberals are victorious in the upcoming elections, will other religious European countries see a similar trend?
